Canceled series ‘The Killing’ may return to AMC

“The Walking Dead” may not be the only undead show on AMC: The network is reportedly bringing the canceled murder-mystery series “The Killing” back from the dead.

According to a report in Variety, showrunner Veena Sud and executive producers Dawn Prestwich and Nicole Yorkin are already back in the writers’ room outlining a third season of the series, which will air beginning in May. AMC declined to comment on the report.

Based on the hit Danish series “Forbrydelsen,” “The Killing” focused on a mismatched pair of Seattle detectives, played by Mireille Enos and Joel Kinnaman, investigating the murder of a teenage girl named Rosie Larsen. The moody, rain-soaked series premiered in May 2011 to critical acclaim and strong ratings but suffered from fan backlash after a first season marred by unlikely plot twists and a finale that failed to reveal the identity of Rosie’s murderer.

When “The Killing” returned in April for a second season, viewership was down by a third. AMC eventually canceled the series in July, marking a rare misstep for the network behind “Mad Men” and “Breaking Bad.” Producers at Fox Television Studios immediately announced their intent to find a new home for the show, and since then rumors have swirled of a revival via Netflix.
