Highway 1 reopens in two spots near Big Sur that were closed because of storm

Caltrans opened two popular stretches of Highway 1 south of Big Sur on Friday morning in time for busy holiday weekend travel. The two segments had been closed all week as a precaution during the recent series of storms.

Motorists will still face some one-way stretches, including flagging operations, at the south end of Mud Creek as crews clear mud and debris.

The closures at Paul’s Slide and Mud Creek — parts of the route south of Big Sur that suffered catastrophic damage two years ago — started noon Monday.

The National Weather Service indicated Friday that the storms had cleared the area.

In 2017, heavy rainfall caused a bridge to crack and slide, temporarily cutting off access to Big Sur.

At Mud Creek, near the border of Monterey and San Luis Obispo counties, 5 million cubic yards of debris rained onto the road and forever changed its course. The road was realigned and reopened a year and a half later.

Check all Caltrans road closures on the agency’s online QuickMap.
