The Valley fire in Northern California broke out Saturday and rapidly expanded out of control. The blaze has prompted Gov. Jerry Brown to issue a state of emergency, and many mandatory evacuations are in place.

The fire has destroyed hundreds of homes and other structures, state fire officials announced Sunday.

Los Angeles Times reporters Lee Romney and Paige St. John are at the scene of the destruction, talking with residents and surveying the damage.
