Man drowns dad’s dog in City Hall pond, N. Calif. police say

A 21-year-old man has been charged with animal cruelty after authorities said he intentionally drowned a pit bull in the Fairfield Civic Center pond in Northern California.

The incident happened around 10:15 a.m. Monday, according to a release from the Fairfield Police Department. Dispatchers fielded calls from people at City Hall reporting seeing a man dunking a dog into the pond and holding it under.

The dog – a female pit bull terrier – was repeatedly pushed under water until it didn’t come back up, police told Fox 40 Sacramento.

Police arrested Bryan Cavanah, who was already on probation for assault with a deadly weapon conviction.

Authorities said Cavanah admitted to officers that he had drowned the dog. The dog is said to belong to his father.

Officers needed a small boat to retrieve the remains of the dog from the pond.
